Thursday, April 20, 2006 ::: ART AND 'ART'WORK Saw the ad for 'The Art of Mark Rothko' exhibition and I'm definitely intriqued by this very red painting: And on further search on his works these are some of the nice ones: To someone who knows nothing about art: 1. I like his works. 2. Apparently he liked red a lot. A fact that I like. 3. I wouldn't mind having these for my renovated home. 4. The 'blue and yellow' painting above titled Homage to Matisse (1953) was sold for $22.3 million USD. 5. So point no.3 above isn't happening, obviously. 6. Alternatively, you can pay $10 (or $5 if you're qualified for concessions fare) to enjoy his works at "The Art of Mark Rothko: Selections from the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C." from now till 4 Jun at the Contemporary Hong Kong Art Gallery, 2/F, Hong Kong Museum of Art. But viewers, before you go, take a look at what he said, quote from wikipedia (read his sad history over there too - he ended his own life :( ): "The fact that people break down and cry when confronted with my pictures shows that I can communicate those basic human emotions.. the people who weep before my pictures are having the same religious experience I had when painting them. And if you say you are moved only by their color relationships then you miss the point." So I hope you didn't miss the point when you view the above posted images (found through google search). But I definitely missed the point. And this: "Since my pictures are large, colorful and unframed, and since museum walls are usually immense and formidable, there is the danger that the pictures relate themselves as decorative areas to the walls. This would be a distortion of their meaning, since the pictures are intimate and intense, and are the opposite of what is decorative." So my above opinion would certainly upset him. Oh well. Let's talk about 'artwork', shall we? Let's take a look of some very 'contemporary' 'artwork' - the great efforts created by the human kind today. To someone who knows a little something about album 'artworks': 1. This simple square contains a million things that are wrong. 2. Editing tools such as Microsoft word can produce a better design, seriously. At least they can try using that 'Font Wizard', and pick fonts that actually 'go together'. 3. And the album title - (if you've noticed there's actually one) - oh, give us a break. Who didn't know you had a divorce already. 4. I remember reading a quote from him saying 'he's not looking for sympathy' etc etc. 5. By releasing something like this he's simply counting how many people on earth has sympathy for him.
